American as Apple Pie Press Release

Raritan Valley Symphonic Band Children’s Concert
Sunday, February 7, 2010, 3 PM

For Immediate Release:

The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band will present its annual children’s concert on Sunday, February 7th at 3:00 pm in the Bridgewater-Raritan High School auditorium. The concert will be followed by a demonstration of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in the auditorium lobby given by members of the band. The school is located at 600 Garretson Road in Bridgewater. Admission is free and open to the public.

The theme of the concert, for children ages two to ten, is “American as Apple Pie,” and will feature songs about the history and folklore of American culture.  The band will play Sammy Nestico’s arrangement “A Tribute to Stephen Foster”; a medley of Disney tunes; a selection from “Looney Tunes” cartoons; and music written by John Williams, who contributed to the music scores for “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” and “Hook,” among many other movies.  The concert will be approximately forty-five minutes long.

The children’s concert will be conducted by Ms. Jennifer Eidel, the assistant conductor and principal clarinetist of the RVSB. Ms. Eidel is also a member of the Eastern Wind Symphony, and is a former music educator in the Somerset and Hunterdon County public schools.

The RVSB is a 100-member adult symphonic band with its volunteer membership drawn from central New Jersey and the surrounding area. The band is known for its tradition of bringing quality music to the community, frequently featuring some of New Jersey’s most talented soloists, and providing free and accessible music education outreach to the community.  The band was the recipient of a 2007 Excellence in the Arts Award from the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

The concert is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. The Band is sponsored by the Jointure for Community Adult Education and by contributions from local businesses, corporations, foundations and private citizens.
