Raritan Valley Symphonic Band

Spring Concert

The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Larry Markiewicz, will present its spring concert, “Made in America”, featuring radio host Dr. Rick Charwin. The concert will be held on Sunday, April 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School auditorium. The school is located Merriwood Ave, Bridgewater, New Jersey. Admission to the concert is free. 

The Band will perform Lincoln Portrait, a dramatic piece composed by Aaron Copland with excerpts from the great speeches of the 16th president, which will feature Dr. Charwin as the narrator. Dr. Charwin will also narrate Tubby the Tuba by George Kleinsinger and Paul Tripp, a classic for children of all ages, and will feature Band member Basil Magro as the tuba soloist. The Band will also play a medley of well-known favorites by Irving Berlin, including  Alexander’s Ragtime Band, There’s No Business Like Show Business, and Blue Skies, as well as selections from The Sound of Music and South Pacific by Rogers and Hammerstein.

Dr. Richard A. Charwin, Ed.D. is the host of This is the Moment, a weekly radio show on WDVR FM that deals with issues related to adolescents and their families. The show includes humorous stories from “The Old News Zone”, as well as a variety of guests from all walks of life. WDVR provides non-commercial educational radio service with a wide variety of music and talk  utilizing a staff of unpaid volunteers. Dr. Charwin is a practicing professional counselor.  He holds a Master’s degree in Counseling, certification as a School Counselor, and a Doctorate in Child and Youth Studies. Dr. Charwin is also a Director of Guidance for Bernards High School.

The RVSB is under the direction of Larry Markiewicz, who is a Director of Bands at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in Bridgewater, New Jersey.  Additionally, he has been a guest conductor and clinician with many groups, including wind bands, student leadership seminars, and the top competitive drum and bugle corps worldwide. The RVSB is an adult symphonic band with its volunteer membership drawn from central New Jersey and the surrounding area. The Band has a rich 23-year history and has become known for its tradition of bringing quality music to the community, frequently featuring some of New Jersey’s most talented soloists, and providing free and accessible music education outreach to the community.

The concert is possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. The Band is sponsored by the Jointure for Community Adult Education and by contributions from local businesses, corporations, foundations and private citizens.
