
The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Jerry Rife, will perform its Spring concert at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 21 at Montgomery High School located on Burnt Hill Road in Skillman, N.J.Admission is free. See below for the program and directions.
Now in its 16th season, the RVSB is comprised of 75 area musicians who perform in the Sousa tradition, playing a diverse, exciting repertoire. Conductor Rife describes the Band's April 21 concert, Step Into Spring, as "an opportunity to hear a live performance of great band music that will touch your heart."
Lighter pieces will be Strauss's lively Clear Track Polka, A Cohen Broadwav Festival, and The Whistler and His Dog to be performed by piccolo soloist Lori Herz. The Band will also play marches by John Philip Sousa and Henry Fillmore. Its founder and Director Emeritus, Dr. Anthony Isch, who retired last year, will return to guest-conduct the popular National Emblem March.
Classical selections include Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave and Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld, featuring solos by principal clarinet Edward Meyers. Also on the program is A Tribute to Stephen Foster, an medley of Foster's works arranged for the United States Marine Band. The 90-minute concert will conclude with America's official march, The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Dr. Rife is Chair of the Music Area and Professor of Music at Rider University, Lawrenceville, New Jersey. A classical clarinetist and professional jazz musician,he is the author of numerous articles on band music and the associate producer of the acclaimed television documentary, "If You Knew Sousa" for the PBS series, The American Experience.

Take US Route 206 South from Somerville or North from Princeton, NJ. Turn West at the light on Sunset Road (approximately 4 miles south of Amwell Road or 7 miles north of Princeton). Go 0.9 miles to Burnt Hill Road and turn left. High school is on the left. Auditorium is in the rear.
