Simon Boyar will perform Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble, a rhythmic and dynamic piece by Ney Rosauro with enchanting Brazilian melodies.  Mr. Boyar will follow the concerto with Billy Joel’s lively Root Beer Rag. Other concert highlights include Morning, Noon and Night (in Vienna) Overture by Franz von Suppé, Mancini Magic, a medley of popular tunes by Henry Mancini, Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg, as well as spirited marches. The band will also celebrate the season with favorites such as Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, I’ll Be Home for Christmas  arranged by James Swearingen, and more.

The concert will be followed by a master class given by Mr. Boyar in the Hillsborough High School band room at 5:30 pm. Students, professionals, and adult amateurs are welcome to attend. Those interested in playing for Mr. Boyar should contact the band at 908-359-3136. The class is free to the public as part of the band’s outreach program.

With his passionate pioneering spirit and unequalled talent, Simon is exciting audiences and bringing the marimba into the forefront of popular culture. An accomplished soloist, Simon Boyar has appeared as a marimba soloist with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and as a percussion soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra. He has performed with many ensembles, including the American Symphony Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony, the North Jersey Philharmonic, and the Juilliard Percussion ensemble. He was a member of the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps Drum Line while he attended Hillsborough High School. He is currently a member of the progressive classical ensemble, Gotham5 which has performed at Studio 54.  Upon Simon’s graduation from the Juilliard School, he joined the Juilliard Pre-College faculty, where he now serves as both Director of the Pre-College Percussion Ensemble, as well as Chairman of the Pre-College Percussion Department. As a tribute to Juilliard’s 100th anniversary in 2006, Simon is creating an innovative program, which will have the marimba as its centerpiece and driving force, with the intent of promoting the public’s blossoming love of the marimba. The RVSB welcomes Simon back to his hometown of Hillsborough!

The RVSB is newly under the direction of Larry Markiewicz, who is a Director of Bands at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in Bridgewater, New Jersey.  Additionally, he has been a guest conductor and clinician with many groups, including wind bands, student leadership seminars, and the top competitive drum and bugle corps worldwide. The RVSB is a 60-member adult symphonic band with its volunteer membership drawn from central New Jersey and the surrounding area. The band has a rich 22-year history and has become known for its tradition of bringing quality music to the community, frequently featuring some of New Jersey’s most talented soloists, and providing free and accessible music education outreach to the community.

The concert and master class are made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. The Band is sponsored by the Jointure for Community Adult Education and by contributions from local businesses, corporations, foundations and private citizens.
