Raritan Valley Symphonic Band

Winter Concert

Sunday,  December 5, 1999 at 3 pm

Location: Hillsborough High School Auditorium

The public is invited to a free holiday concert by the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, recognized as one of New Jersey's finest local musical groups, on Sunday, December 5, at 3:00 p.m. in the new Hillsborough High School auditorium. Dr. Jerry Rife, appointed as the Band's conductor last year, Says, "the program will include some of the finest classical works, marches and popular music from the last century. It's a great opportunity to hear a live musical performance heralding in the holidays."

The one-hour concert will feature percussionists Audrey Puzyr Spies, Janice Mehalick, Georgette Rogers and Linda Docar playing three works for marimba and xylophone, "Fiddle Faddie", "Bolero" and the Galop from The Comedians. Major works to be played by the Band will be the Overture to The Queen's Secret, the spiritual Deep River, Cakewalk from Robert Russell Bennett's "Suite of Old American Dances" and "Russian Sailors' Dance" from Gliere's The Red Poppy.

Rife says the concert "will open with the world's perfect march, Alte Kameraden, composed in the 1890's by Carl Teike and will end with the greatest march ever written, Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. We'll also play lots of holiday music including Sleigh Ride, Parade of the Tin Soldiers, Silent Night, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The concert is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. Funding has also been made possible, in part, by a grant from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission (SCC&HC) and Forbes, Inc., through the SCC&HC Mini-Grant Program.
