The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band will present its annual
children’s concert on Sunday, February 3rd at 3:00 pm in the Hillsborough High
School auditorium. The concert will be followed by a demonstration of
woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in the auditorium lobby given by
members of the band. The school is located at 466 Raider Boulevard, Hillsborough,
New Jersey. Admission is free and open to the public.
The theme of the concert, for children ages two to eight, is “Music and
Movement,” and will feature songs that will inspire children to move in
different ways. The Band will play selections of “Copa Cabana Rumba,”
“Can-Can” from Orpheus, “Peer Gynt Suite,” “Rocky,” and “The Typewriter,” along
with some well-known marches. The concert will be approximately forty-five
minutes long.
The children’s concert will be conducted by Ms. Jennifer Eidel, the assistant conductor and principal clarinetist of the RVSB. Ms. Eidel is also a member of the Eastern Wind Symphony, and is a former music educator in the Somerset and Hunterdon county public schools. The RVSB is a 75-member adult symphonic band with its volunteer membership drawn from central New Jersey and the surrounding area. The band is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary season, and has become known for its tradition of bringing quality music to the community, frequently featuring some of New Jersey’s most talented soloists, and providing free and accessible music education outreach to the community.
The band was the recipient of a 2007 Excellence in the Arts Award from the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. On Sunday, March 16, 2008, the band will be presenting their 25th anniversary concert, when they will re-create the music played at their first concert, with guest appearances from two conductors who led the band in past years.
The concert is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. The Band is sponsored by the Jointure for Community Adult Education and by contributions from local businesses, corporations, foundations and private citizens. For more information about the concert, becoming a sponsor, to request assistance for persons with disabilities, or to inquire about joining the Band, consult the Band’s website at www.rvsb.org or call 908-359-3136.
