Featuring Guest Conductor Chief Master Sergeant Edward J. Teleky, Drum Major of the United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass

For Immediate Release: The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. William Berz and special guest conductor,Chief Master Sergeant Edward J. Teleky, will present “American Salute”, a concert of patriotic and high spirited music by American composers.  The concert will be held on Friday, June 4 at 8:00 p.m. at Hillsborough High School. The school is located at the intersection of Raider Boulevard and Amwell Road in Hillsborough, New Jersey. Admission is free.

“The Band is greatly honored to have Chief Master Sergeant Teleky perform at this concert”, says RVSB music director and Rutgers professor,  Dr. William Berz.   CM Sergeant Teleky, who serves as drum major and musical director for the Ceremonial Brass, The United States Air Force Band, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C,  will lead the RVSB in stirring patriotic works including the US Air Force Band’s arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic (arr. S. Nestlee), and Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever

 

 Other works on the program include Foster’s America, a three-movement suite featuring four original songs by American composer, Stephen Foster arranged by David Gillingham, Irving Berlin – A Symphonic Portrait arranged for band by Hawley Ades,  From the Delta, by William Grant Still and traditional marches such as King’s Hosts of Freedom, Bagley’s National Emblem, and Fillmore’s Americans We.  Continuing its mission to introduce audiences to music by some of America’s most promising new composers, the Band will perform MetaMarch by Steven Bryant, which was commissioned by the Band in celebration of its 20th anniversary last year, and Marche Comique, by Mark Zuckerman, who is a recipient of a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship for 2004, and will be present at the concert. 

 

Guest conductor CM Sgt. Teleky has performed a wide variety of ceremonies in the D.C. area such as state arrivals at the White House, full honor arrivals for foreign dignitaries at the Pentagon, retirement and award ceremonies, patriotic programs, concerts, and military full honor funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. An accomplished percussionist, Chief Teleky has performed with the Ceremonial Brass and other Air Force Band components. Additionally, he has been featured as a vibraphone soloist at military and civilian protocol functions nationally.

 

Chief Teleky holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music performance from The Julliard School in New York City. His military awards and decorations include a Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal with an oak-leaf cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with two oak-leaf clusters and a National Defense Service Medal.

 

The RVSB is under the direction of Dr. William Berz, Director of Bands at Rutgers – the State University of New Jersey.  Now in its 21st season, the Band was recently  recognized by Governor McGreevey, the State Legislature and the Mayor of Hillsborough for its exemplary efforts in providing the community with entertainment as well as cultural artistry and expression.

 

The concert is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. The Band is sponsored by the Jointure for Community Adult Education and by contributions from local businesses, corporations, foundations and private citizens. Directions to Hillsborough High School: Amwell Road intersects US Route 206 approx. 6 miles south of
Somerville, NJ. From Route 206, proceed west on Amwell Road to the second traffic light. Turn left on Raider
Boulevard and pass in front of the high school into the parking lot to the left of the building.
