Location: Montgomery High School Auditorium

The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Jerry Rife, will perform a concert for the public on Friday, March 17 (St. Patrick's Day) at 8:00 p.m. at Montgomery High School, located on Burnt Hill Road in Skillman, New Jersey. Admission is free.

Featured soloist with the Band will be New Jersey trumpeter Donald Batchelder, described by the Newark Star Ledger as "one of the hot young free-lance trumpeters on the New York and New Jersey scenes." A frequent performer with the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the American Symphony and the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Batchelder is principal trumpet in the Stamford (Connecticut) Symphony, the Westfield (New Jersey) Symphony, and orchestras in Toluca, Mexico and Seoul, Korea. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from The Julliard School, has performed on WNYC and WQXR, and has recorded on the EMI/Angel, Koch, ASV and CRI labels.

According to Conductor Jerry Rife, "Having Don Batchelder join us as our soloist offers area residents an opportunity to hear an outstanding trumpet virtuoso. He will perform Concerto for Trumpet by Arutunian followed by the popular Irish tune, Danny Boy. Because our concert will be held on St. Patrick's Day, we'll continue the Irish theme with Clare Grundman's An Irish Rhapsody, Leroy Anderson's Irish Washerwoman and The Girl I Left Behind Me and Percy Grainger's Irish Tune from Country Derry. The Band will also play Franz von Suppe's Poet and Peasant Overture, Shostakovich's Polka from "The Golden Age", selections from Robert Russell Bennett's Suite of Old American Dances and Sousa marches.

The concert is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Somerset County Cultural-& Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program. Funding has also been made possible, in part, by a grant from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission (SCC&HC) and Forbes, Inc., through the SCC&HC Mini-Grant Program. The Band is committed to making its programs accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. For more information about the concert, becoming a sponsor, to request assistance for those with disabilities, or to inquire about joining the Band, consult the Band's website at http://members.home.net/rvsband or call (609) 882-4148.
